Water Saving Tips For The Kitchen

Last year Texas broke out of a painful and extended drought. We learn to appreciate resources when they are scarce. After being blessed with incredible rains, lakes rose and reservoirs were replenished. It’s good to have the water back.

That said, it’s never a good time to waste water. It’s a precious resource. So how can we look to save water when we’re working in the kitchen?

Run your dishwasher only when it’s full. It takes the same amount of water to clean a full load as it does a partial load, so wait until it’s full to push the “on” button.

If your refrigerator doesn’t have a water dispenser, keep a pitcher of drinking water in the fridge instead of running the water until it gets cold.

Fix your leaky faucets! A drip doesn’t sound like much. Yet if you have two leaky faucets that drip only 10 times a minute, that’s about 700 gallons of water a year down the drain. A faucet that drips once per second will waste 3,000 gallons a year. That’s enough to take about 180 showers!

When thawing food, instead of soaking it in water put it in the refrigerator overnight. You’ll save water and it’s a safer method of defrosting.

This tip will make a lot of people happy. Believe it or not, you’ll use a lot less water to clean your dishes if you use your dishwasher instead of washing them by hand. If you have an Energy Star rated machine, you can save almost 5,000 gallons of water a year! Not to mention about 230 hours of time. That’s 230 hours you can spend reading or catching up on your favorite show on Netflix.
