New Year’s Plumbing, Heating And Air Conditioning Resolutions

This time of year we think about what we’d like to do differently when the calendar page turns to January. Weight loss is usually high on the list. After all the holiday candy and cookies, our blood type can be “chocolate covered cherry”.

But what about some New Year resolutions for the valuable equipment you depend on to keep your warm and cool during the year?

The pros at Sinclair are here to suggest some resolutions for your heating and cooling system.

1 – Resolve to replace your filter every month. A clean filter makes for a happy heating/cooling system. It’s your first line of defense against dust (which we have plenty of in West Texas), dirt and other particulates. Look for a pleated filter that is not too thin or too thick. Too thin and it will allow too much dirt in. Too thick and it will make your system work too hard to pull the air through.

2 – Resolve to maintain your drain. Monthly preemptive cleaning can keep major plumbing problems away. Lift the strainers and pull out any hair and debris. Don’t wait for a clog to use your plunger. Plunge your kitchen and bathroom sinks. Pour boiling water down your drains. It will keep your drains clear. However, DO NOT pour boiling water into a toilet. Most toilets are made of porcelain, which is naturally cool. The extreme difference in temperature can create cracks that would require the toilet to be replaced.

3 – Resolve to control your energy costs. The simple things your parents taught you are still good ideas. Turn off the light when you leave the room. Don’t leave electrical appliances running. Get a programmable thermostat to save money on your energy bill. Seal up the cracks that allow your heated/cooled air to escape.

4 – Resolve to have your heating/cooling system and plumbing inspected once a year. A professional inspection of your equipment has many benefits, not the least of which is catching potential problems before they become major repairs. Your system works hard to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter. Regular use over a long period of time is called wear and tear. Professional technicians are able to diagnose worn parts before they break. Much better to prevent a problem before it happens than to lose your “cool” on a 90 degree day.
