Air Conditioning Mistakes

It should be a simple process, right? Install the air conditioner, turn it on and cool down the house.

A properly installed air conditioning unit is a blessing. We stay cool and comfortable inside while the sweltering heat beats down outside. Yet there are mistakes to avoid when it comes to air conditioning units. Here are a few…

Also, if possible, don’t place the unit in full sun. When I lived in Phoenix, that was impossible because the AC units were often placed on the roof and the sun shines 360 days a year. If you have a choice, keep it in the shade. Full sun will heat the unit and cause it to work harder, shortening the life of your equipment and raising your energy bills.

Don’t heat your thermostat. The accuracy of the thermostat is determined by its proper placement in the room. If the thermostat is in the sun, close to a heat emitting appliance like a refrigerator or TV, it will cause the thermostat to think the room is warmer than it really is. This activates the unit more often than necessary.

Improperly used ceiling fans. Used rightly, ceiling fans are wonderful at helping to efficiently cool your home. When air is moving, it creates a “wind chill” effect. When using ceiling fans, do not run them backwards (the reverse setting). Running them backwards pulls air up. Running them forward pushes the air down. With proper ceiling fan use, you can get by with setting your thermostat a little higher, saving you money on your energy bill.

Purchase a programmable thermostat that will automatically adjust the temperature from a timer setting. Warmer while you are at work and cooler when you are home. The money you save in energy costs will more than pay for the thermostat.

Regular maintenance actually saves you money. Small problems are diagnosed before they become large problems. Money spent on routine maintenance is much cheaper than a terribly expensive system crash. The old saying, “you get what you pay for” is true. When you pay for annual maintenance you get peace of mind. And reliable operating equipment.
