How to Keep Your Plumbing Pipes From Freezing

A pipe with frozen water coming out of itOne of the most frustrating things about really cold weather is the potential for busted plumbing pipes. This can cause major water damage to your home or business and can cost a lot of money to repair. I wanted to share some tips on how to prevent your plumbing pipes from freezing.

One of the first things I would do to prevent your plumbing pipes from freezing is to insulate your outdoor water faucet(s). This is very critical because if an outdoor water line was to bust you might not know water was leaking out of it until your next water bill arrived! So, go buy an outdoor water faucet cover, they are very inexpensive and it will save you a lot of money in repairs.

The next thing I would do in order to prevent a plumbing pipe from busting is to check the outside walls of your home for cracks in the foundation, brick, or siding. If you have a substantial crack on the outside walls of your business or home, you could be exposing a plumbing pipe to the freezing temperatures. This is another “easy fix” when it comes to prevention. Usually all you have to do in order to fill a crack or hole in the side of your building is to fill it with caulking or spray foam insulation. This will insure that if you have pipes on the outside wall of your building, they will be protected from freezing temperatures.

These are just a couple of tips that I thought I would share with you. Do you have any tips you would like to share? Comments?
